As a long time cat owner and employee at an animal shelter, I am very aware of the awful smells cats are capable of creating in their litter boxes. Though there are various brands of cat litter that claim to trap smells, cats STILL have a way of spreading their odors throughout the entire house. Since I’ve yet to master the art of toilet training my cats and they simply refuse to clean up after themselves, I was excited to receive the opportunity to eliminate odors with the Litter Genie Pail.

If, you haven’t heard of The Litter Genie, let me enlighten you! The Litter Genie Pail is a cat litter disposal system that holds up to two weeks of cat litter for one cat. It’s seven-layer refill bags provide you with a convenient and freshly-scented disposal system to mask germy and foul smells.  The Litter Genie Pail retails at an inexpensive amount of $14.99 – $16.99 and is available at Petco, Pet Smart, Target, Walmart, Amazon.com, Chewy.com and other retailers where pet products are sold. The Litter Genie Pail refill bags can be purchased in single, two and four-pack options which will cost you between $5.99 – $35.99 depending on how many refills you buy at once.

Now that you know the details on this innovative system, let me tell you my thoughts….

I was impressed by how well the Litter Genie Disposal System eliminates smells. My living room is no longer my cat’s litter box! Litter Genie’s air-tight odor barrier bags do an amazing job at masking the smells so your litter box isn’t the first thing people notice when they step foot into your home. Along with fighting smells, I am also a fan of the sleek, attractive and discreet design of the Litter Genie Pail. It looks less ‘trashy’ than plastic grocery bags and the system easily fits into small places. In addition to that, the scooper conveniently attaches to the side of the Litter Genie so you’re always prepared for a quick clean.

As much as I loved many of the features on the Litter Genie, there are some features that could use some work. Personally, I found setting up the bags for the Litter Genie to be slightly confusing and time-consuming. I could have just been missing a step, but I do wish preparing the bags was an easier process. I also had trouble using the built-in bag cutter to empty the bag.  Other than that, I’m not sure if it’s cost effective for those with more than one cat. It fills up quickly when you have three cats like I do.

So, while I LOVE the idea of the Litter Genie, I don’t think it’s something that I will regularly use at this point in time. If Litter Genie works on becoming more user-friendly and creates a disposal system specifically for a multi-cat household, I will be more than willing to give them another try.
