For the past few weeks I’ve been altering my diet and changing my lifestyle habits with help from Always Eat After 7 PM: The Revolutionary Rule-Breaking Diet That Lets You Enjoy Huge Dinners, Desserts, and Indulgent Snacks—While Burning Fat Overnight by Joel Marion.

As I’ve discussed in my first post, I’ve been looking for a diet that will help me lose weight, have more energy, and feel better overall. During the second week, I changed my breakfast habits and slowly began intermittent fasting. You can read about my early experience with that in my second post.

Making Progress

It’s been three weeks of following Joel Marion’s diet and so far I’ve lost 6 pounds, have had more energy, and haven’t had the urge to snack as often as I typically do. I’m becoming better at intermittent fasting and seeing the benefits from it. As Joel says in his book: “Intermittent fasting really shines when it comes to improving the hormones that directly affect your hunger, blood sugar, and metabolism. One is insulin. IF combats insulin resistance, meaning that it helps your body use insulin more normally, thereby lowering your diabetes risk and boosting your metabolism.”  So, while intermittent fasting is tricky at first, it gets easier and the benefits such as regulated hormones and accelerated weight loss are beyond worth it.

Recipes & Meal Planning

A couple more things that I’m loving about Always Eat After 7 PM is how thorough it is. Joel Marion doesn’t just give us a bunch of information and leave us to figure it out on our own. In his book, Joel also features several recipes and easy meal planning to help us step by step. One of my favorite recipes from the book is the Cheesy Ground Beef Skillet.

This is similar to meals I’ve had before, but Joel includes ingredients that make it healthier and more fulfilling. This meal is easy, satisfying, and stays within the diet. Plus, who doesn’t love the fact that you can still have cheese, carbs (white rice), and red meat while on this diet?!

Don’t Eliminate carbs, eat the right carbs

I love that I don’t have to completely restrict carbs from my diet and that Always Eat After 7 PM actually encourages it. Of course, you have to eat the right carbs at the right time, but the fact that you don’t have to eliminate them entirely to lose weight is completely revolutionary from what I’ve learned from other diets. It’s also still very mind-blowing to me that you can eat carbs before bed. As it says in Always Eat After 7 PM, “Having carbs in the evening is also a great weight loss strategy. When you’re active, your body burns mainly carbohydrates and muscle glycogen for energy. By eating carbs at night, you allow your body to use them to restore glycogen for energy the next day and provide your body with the glucose it needs to regulate your blood sugar levels during sleep.”

planning ahead

In addition to recipes, Always Eat After 7 PM also features food lists. I don’t know about you, but I get easily overwhelmed about what should be included on my grocery list. But, Joel breaks it down by suggesting foods you should be eating and even including serving sizes. He also includes several outlines of meal plans for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, and pre-bedtime snacks.

From recipes, meal plans, and outlines of exactly what you should be eating, there is so much valuable content in this book.
